Housing Affordability Measures

Description of HAI Sourcebook

Housing Virginia offers this website as a comprehensive housing affordability resource that includes the most current available information on housing affordability. The measures highlighted here provide a benchmark of general affordability over time and illustrate in a straightforward manner the complexities of affordability. Housing Virginia hopes that this website will stimulate discussion on affordability and add exposure to housing affordability issues.

Most of the measures are available for Virginia, its metropolitan areas, independent cities, and counties and are provided over a five-year time period. Measures are explained in detail under DESCRIPTION OF MEASURES.

To access data, click on the links for VIRGINIA, METROPOLITAN AREAS, CITIES AND COUNTIES, HOW YOU COMPARE, or click on one of the menu links to go directly to data for Virginia.

The data provided include a housing and income characteristics summary chart and assorted housing affordability indexes along with trend charts and statewide thematic maps. A paycheck to paycheck analysis is provided for better understanding of affordability for workers. Additional measures are provided that help quantify housing affordability for a particular area.

Main Menu follows. I assume the user can always use the back arrow to get back to the main menu. METROPOLITAN AREAS and CITIES AND COUNTIES should be pop up lists with a scroll down menu and may incorporate a comparison feature as Neal suggested. Clicking on Virginia takes the user to Virginia data (Col/row A4). CAN VIRGINIA DATA BE THE DEFAULT IF A USER DOES NOT GO THROUGH A GEOGRAPHIC BUTTON??? To get data for a metropolitan area or locality, the user would first have to click on METROPOLITAN AREAS or CITIES AND COUNTIES, scroll to an area, and click on it. So, if the user were to click on Metropolitan Areas (Col/Row A5..A15), they would see a pop up menu, would choose their metro of interest, and would click on the menu box for that data they want to see.
