Sourcebook HAIRental Housing Affordability Indexes
 
In addition to the affordability index and components based on median household income, a Rental Affordability Index based on median owner income and a Rental Affordability Index based on median renter income are provided. These indexes reflect affordability of rental housing at both median owner and renter incomes. (Based on the gross rent, including utilities, for the median unit rented).


This chart shows the trend over time of affordability of rental housing based on the median owner and renter income. Quarterly data are shown at the median owner income which represents the percent of the median household income of owners required to occupy the median rental unit and the percent of median renter income to occupy the median rental unit.

This map, for the most recent quarter, shows the affordability of the typical rent unit based on the median household income of owners for Virginia Counties and Independent Cities. The map allows for a visual comparison of housing affordability of rent units at the median income of owners for localities in Virginia. Darker shading indicates a higher index (meaning a larger percent of owner income is needed for rent housing).
